Yonsei Registration Experience Fall 2015

I've realized for a while now that I've been putting down the date for each time I posted but I wasn't sure if I wanted to use the date the what I am going to write about happened or if I wanted to use past tense. I decided I am going to make it easier and simpler for my self if I just used past tense for my writings for now on. Also, this is going to be a long post that is going to include both my experience on Yonsei's registrations and my Japanese class.

Now that I am finally (not really) done with packing and being busy, I can write down my experience of using the Yonsei's Portal and their Registration system. I was supposed to begin this post yesterday since it was around the time I would know if I got into the classes I "registered" for (I will be explaining later by I put those in quotes) but I became busy with packing what I needed to what I didn't need and then getting ready for the BBQ that my cousin's were throwing for me. I will also be uploading pictures from the party after I am done with this post.

Okay, now to the fun explanations and and whole Yonsei experience. Remember that it is highly recommended that this process has to be done through Internet Explorer for it to function correctly. I first used Internet Explorer to register for classes then I was able to use Chrome later when I had already gotten all the classes I want on my list and just wanted to view or cancel some other things. It worked perfectly fine for me but to be safe, use Internet Explorer when trying to register for classes FIRST. Also, only logging in from one place is recommended to prevent getting into trouble (because Yonsei does explain this in their packet) and losing what you've took so long to get into because it takes the most recent page and log in.

It was seriously frustrating for me since the first registration round also had happened to be an hour before the start of the last day of my summer class, Japanese 401. This means final exams which means studying... I had to study and then try to get to class before it started at 6PM. It doesn't sounds all that hard but, the problem was that registration for classes were on Thursday 9AM (KST), meaning PST here would be Wednesday at 5PM. I usually leave for school 30 minutes before it begins, but today I left 10-15 minutes before it began and it was a good thing that Anna drove us to school, though it didn't make a difference since she went to the usual place I usually parked lol. The email that was sent to students said that there was a wishlist option, but without access to the portal yet, I wasn't able to use it (even though they said we can, I was only able to use it after I had already gotten my classes onto my list, but I believe I could have used it if I was using the English site, which I will explain below, too). Yonsei also explained that they are using a new registration system beginning this Fall semester and are using a mileage system.

I was making my weird noises and I think my younger brothers and sisters thought I was crazy for a moment there... I still made it to class on time for the finals with Mary. It would have been great if I had 2 extra hours to register for classes and the internet didn't die on me. This day, the internet just had to go all crazy and decided to DIE! It decided it wants to stop working in the morning and I thought that it would come back on later, and it did. But it decided to die 10 minutes before 5PM... resulting in a crazy me :] I was thinking of driving to school at this time but Mary was not ready yet and, for some reason, was slow at getting ready so I suddenly remembered that I can use my phone's hotspot. I was able to successfully get onto the Yonsei Portal site but the English version continued showing me an "error" page!

At this time, it was already 5:10PM and I was texting Shena back and forth through Kakao. She also had the same problems. She then told me that the Korean version was working completely fine. I decided to try it out and it worked! With my limited Korean, I navigated the site and clicked on what I believe were "yes, no/cancel" buttons and got onto the course selection page. YAY! It was a good thing I had already written down all my classes that I wanted and their course numbers. It was easier to click on the classes I want and what not. But at this time, I still couldn't understand because the page was still all in Korean... I screen shot the page to Shena to see if I was doing it correctly since she was able to operate on the English version but she wasn't sure either but it looked the same as hers. Both of us were unsure if we were already "registered" for the classes or not. Since Yonsei's system is different this semester and we had no way of knowing if we were doing it correctly or not, we decided to just leave them as they are. But I'd like to say that we WERE doing it correctly. We successfully got into the classes that we wanted :]!!! We didn't use the wishlist for this. It was recommended to use for easier and faster access but I didn't know where it was...I found out later through the English version that it was the one of the beginning columns next to the course names. I also asked a friend who previously studied at Yonsei last year if I was doing it correctly and she said that she was unsure but that she was sure I was registered for the classes. But I was thinking that I would have to wait until the 12th to see if I was officially registered into the classes since it was on the schedule given.

Now that I have the classes I wanted on my registration list, I went back to reading what was sent through to our email. They mentioned the mileage/bidding system and I was completely confused with that. Now I know that the bidding system is the new system that Yonsei has added to use it as a way for students to prioritize classes they'd want to take. The more bidding the class had, it meant that it was a class they wanted to take (whether it was for their major or for a requirement)  Logging back onto the portal through the Korean version of the site (since the English one was still not working for me), I used the help of naver to help translate. I was able to use the bidding system for my classes. I'm not sure if Shena had done the same thing but by now it is already 5:30PM. I had a total of 72 mileages to use and there was a limit of 36 for each class. I quickly bidded 20, 20, 16, 15, 1 for Pre Modern Korean History, Topics on Korean Language & Culture, Traditional Korean Society & Modernization, Intro to Korean Studies, and Intensive Korean Language respectively. It was recommended that Intensive Korean can wait until the 2nd round opening next week to be added but I added it in anyways. The next day went to double check if I had done it correctly on the English version of the site and I was :] The last I checked (12th, Wednesday morning), there was still available seats left for those wanting to take it. It was about 5:45PM now and I was finally able to leave home for school.

I wanted to double check later after class but the Japanese test took the whole 2 hours of class to finish. It was the longest test I've taken all of my college life lol. It felt like it had more than 10 pages and there was so much writing to do. My hands hurted after taking the exam. But, I felt I had done a good job :]

Anyways, like I had mentioned earlier, we were able to successfully add and register for our classes. Now that's all done, we only have to fly to Korea now~~ We got ourselves (mostly through Shena's research, Thank you Shena!) a room at a goshiwon (small, one bedroom rooms) but with a bunk bed at 750,000 wons each month. We already paid our room registration fees last week and will pay for the room when we arrive there on the 18th. I am very excited to be exploring around a week before Orientation starts on the 24th :] After our Orientation, we would also have to get our Alien Registration Cards (ARC) and I will be writing about my experience on that too since I've read from other blogs that they had to wait hours to receive it O.o !

Now there is only 5 days left until I leave~

Thank you for reading~ 감사합니다~

Bye~ 안녕~
